International Children’s Day

Today we celebrate World Children’s Day, a day dedicated to all the children of the world – their rights, imagination, dreams, and happiness.
This day was established by the United Nations in 1954 to remind us of the importance of protecting children and respecting their rights.
On November 20, the world commemorates the adoption of two key documents: the Declaration of the Rights of the Child (1959) and the Convention on the Rights of the Child (1989).

Children around the world mark this day in many unique and inspiring ways:

In Turkey, children symbolically “take over” the government – they are chosen as “child ministers,” and some even appear in parliament and on television.

In Japan, families decorate their homes with colorful paper carp streamers – koinobori – which symbolize strength, happiness, and children’s success.

In China, Children’s Day is celebrated on June 1st – a day with no school! Children enjoy parades, games, and fun family gatherings.

In India, November 14th is celebrated as Children’s Day in honor of the first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, who believed that “children are the future of the nation.”

In Sweden and other Nordic countries, the focus is on the voice of the child – children take part in discussions and share ideas for a better world.

Here in Bosnia and Herzegovina, we celebrate World Children’s Day on November 20 through performances, workshops, drawings, and messages from children who always remind us how important honesty, play, and kindness truly are.

“Every child has the right to be loved, safe, curious, and free to dream. Your smile can change the world – keep it shining!”

Dear children, remind yourself of your rights through the children’s version of the Convention on the Rights of the Child
