The Youth Association “The New Hope” Žepče is implementing the initiative “Don’t Gamble with Luck,” aiming to raise awareness about the harmful effects of gambling addiction and related vices. This initiative is part of the project “DIGI:MON – Monitoring and Improving the Status of Youth through the Establishment of a Digital Youth Center,” funded by the European Union. The initiative is co-financed by the Municipality of Žepče.
We held the first education module on preventing addiction to gambling and related vices among children and youth. Thirty-two young people from our municipality participated. During this first module, topics covered included cognitive distortions, the illusion of control over luck, motives that encourage youth and children to gamble, common myths related to gambling, and live testimonies from real people who have struggled with this problem. Participants had the opportunity to learn about the consequences of such behavior and, through personal stories, understand the damage this deviant behavior can cause. The workshops were designed and prepared by Martina Tadić, a Master of Social Work. Below we share statements from some of the participants:
“Participating in this project helped me understand how gambling can ruin lives and the impact it has on individuals and their families. I learned that what seems like fun can turn into addiction and destroy not only financial stability but also relationships with family and friends, damage health, and ruin the future of young people like us.” – Džejna
“Today’s education taught us something new, useful, and informative. This workshop ‘opened my eyes’ to how gambling can negatively affect individuals and their families. I especially appreciated hearing real stories that made me think more deeply about this topic.” – Erna
We take this opportunity to thank the management of the Žepče Secondary Mixed School, the Armani Shopping Center, and the “N” Bookstore in Žepče for supporting this activity.
