One of the key issues affecting children and youth in the city of Lukavac—identified through peer research conducted by the local Red Cross Youth Group—is youth passivity. In response to this issue, the group organized a youth camp aimed at highlighting the benefits of non-formal education and the acquisition of life skills through engagement and volunteering in the NGO sector.
In this context, a three-day Regional Youth Camp titled “Youth in Hero Suits 2022” was held at the PD “Svatovac” site, organized by the Red Cross Youth of the City of Lukavac. The camp brought together participants from city and municipal Red Cross organizations across Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as volunteers from Croatia and Serbia.
As part of the camp, a demonstration exercise was conducted by the Red Cross Youth of Lukavac, together with camp participants and local protection and rescue services from the Lukavac area.
Nearly 70 volunteers attended workshops on the themes: “Man Is His Own Greatest Opponent” and “Legal Frameworks in Volunteering.”
Participants also had the opportunity to explore the surroundings of PD “Svatovac” and enjoy a boat tour to discover the beauty and potential of Lake Modrac.
The camp served as a platform for young people to connect, exchange experiences, learn, gain new skills, and apply them within their own local communities.
“The camp is part of the activities our Red Cross Youth group in Lukavac is implementing through the project ‘Connecting the Dots – Advancing Children’s Rights’, and it is the first in a series of activities organized after assessing the needs of our peers. Next, we plan a series of promotional and educational workshops and meetings,” said Selmir Smajić, coordinator of the CAY (Children and Youth) group in Lukavac.
The camp was financially supported by the European Union in Bosnia and Herzegovina through the project “Connecting the Dots – Advancing Children’s Rights,” which is being implemented by the Red Cross of the City of Lukavac in partnership with the World Vision BH Foundation and the Association “Naša djeca” Sarajevo, as well as with support from the City of Lukavac.
